What Pfizer's landmark COVID vaccine results mean for the pandemic

Back to high school biology. This vaccine delivers viral messenger RNA (mRNA) which one's own cells translate to produce the virus' spike protein. The expectation is that one's immune system will then mount a response to the viral spike protein. The increase in circulating antibodies and immune cells to the artificial spike protein are now at the ready to react more readily when one is infected with the real viral spike protein out in the community. Viruses exploit one's cellular machinery to copy itself. This vaccine seeks to do likewise to copy a small part of the real Covid virus. There are concerns regarding the uncertainties of this approach as outlined in the article. One further concern is that of breach of process. Drug companies do not typically announce their own studies before peer review and FDA review. One can understand why--conflict of interest. If every drug company announced the unverified claims of its own studies, chances are every drug manufactured may be touted as the latest and best savior of humankind.
