Our weird sleep pattern might be why we are the top species on the planet

Interesting hypothesis but I am skeptical. Probable correlation rather than causation or, to turn things on its head, perhaps our sleep pattern is an outcome of other factors. Another hypothesis relates to that of Hypnic jerks--the involuntary muscle twitch we sometimes experience when drifting off into the first stage of sleep. Hypnic jerks are hypothesized to be a fall reflex left over from the time when we slept in trees. We would reflexively reach out to grab a branch if we were to fall from the tree during sleep goes the hypothesis.
