Maxillary Sinus Transillumination

Sinus transillumination--another simple test. As we enter viral fall/winter season, bear in mind that most cases of runny nose, nasal congestion and sinus pressure without fever and without swelling of lymph nodes in the neck are likely to be caused by virus. If you have sinus pressure your doctor may perform a trans-illumination technique comparing right and left sides. The affected side may be darker than the unaffected/lesser affected side. Most cases of viral or bacterial sinusitis resolve spontaneously within 10 days, observation and treatment of the associated symptoms with analgesics and decongestants, WITHOUT antibiotics, is usually sufficient.
