Ankle Brachial Index

The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)--a simple and under utilized tool to screen for arterial disease of the legs and overall risk for heart disease. Symptoms and signs of poor arterial blood flow to the legs may include a tired, heavy feeling of the legs whilst walking that improves with rest, skin which is shiny and hairless over the lower legs, skin discoloration or non-healing ulcers of the lower legs. An abnormal ABI indicates an elevated risk for heart attack, stroke, or vascular death.
